Empowering smallholder farmers with knowledge transfer to enhance their livelihoods
In 2017, we set out to support our client in enabling smallholders through training in sustainable agricultural practices. Since then, ELFIN Consulting has co-developed and implemented a variety of tools and programs, improving farmers’ livelihoods worldwide.
Challenge
Did you know? Over 500 million smallholder farmers lack access to modern technologies and capacity-building programs, severely limiting their productivity and inhibiting their potential for growth.
Insights
Our research shed light on critical insights into the demographics of smallholders in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC). These individuals often operate in remote areas with limited connectivity, highlighting the essential role of offline technologies in reaching them effectively. Furthermore, we recognized the necessity for tailored solutions, understanding that adoption significantly increases when content is customized to meet the farmers’ specific needs, thereby enhancing their yields and production.
Actions
In response to these insights, we developed a comprehensive capacity-building program for smallholders. This program was designed to provide tailored training in sustainable agriculture practices worldwide, in 13 languages. It featured farmer-friendly digital trainings, rural outreach tools, and a farmer-to-consumer recognition label. Additionally, we facilitated 8 years of continuous implementation management with key countries to support the rollout of these initiatives.
Impact
To date, we have reached over 4 million farmers, with 600,000 directly benefiting from our on-the-field trainings across 21 countries with 96% score user acceptance. These achievements underscore the effectiveness of our approach in empowering smallholders and fostering sustainable agricultural practices globally.
